Birkenhead Primary takes children from 5 years of age to around 11 years of age - Years 0 to 6. After Year 6, the children move on to intermediate schools in the Northcote/Birkenhead area. We have a diverse student population - predominantly Pakeha/NZ European, but with about 20% Asian/Indian/MIddle Eastern, and many other smaller groups, including NZ Maori, Japanese, African, Samoan and Tongan.
The school usually has a roll of about 340 children at the start of the year, and takes about 50 new entrants to finish the year on about 390 children.
We have 15 teachers and several teacher aides. The school is managed by the Principal and management team and governed by a Board of Trustees.
School activities are supported by the Parent/Teacher Association.
Our curriculum
We teach the full New Zealand curriculum through a wide range of activities, using inquiry and problem-based learning approaches. The school also has a host of extra-curricular activities for children to choose from.
Our assessment
Our teaching practice is informed by regular assessment of each child's learning, and we report to parents consistently throughout the year. We are currently planning the implementation of National Standards reporting.
Our organisation
This is about who we are and how we do things. Here you'll find our vision, mission and values, our policies and procedures, and the branches of the school established to help us thrive, such as the Birkenhead Primary School Learning Trust.
Our facilities
Our school is located in the heart of the Birkenhead shopping district. It is surrounded by roads, commercial enterprises and the Birkenhead Bowling Club. The school has two entranceways; the main gate from Mokoia Road, and a gate into the Highbury shopping complex carpark, with a drop-off and pick-up zone for children at each entrance.
Our history
Birkenhead Primary began as a side school of Northcote Primary, but assumed its own identity in the 1919. Find out more about the school's traditions and heritage here.
