Mrs Lapuste is back at work after visiting family and friends in Romania. She reports that the temperatures were 49 degrees some days where she was staying, and 50 degrees in some places!

Skating - I hope that your children enjoyed the skate opportunity last weekend. Due to the commission the school received from the operator, and the hard work of parents and children in making and selling foods and crafts, the weekend raised $3400 towards the Year Six Camp. Well done everyone! Special thanks to Charlotte Armstrong and Kiriana O’Connell for organising this fantastic event.

IT Gear - after a stocktake of the IT gear we have in the school, we have ordered $25,000 worth of new gear - ipads, Chromebooks, replacement chargers - funded by the Lion Foundation through our local Birkenhead Licensing Trust. Our wonderful PTA group is funding $3500 worth of headphones to enable the children to use the ipads apps independently.

Important reminder: Out of Zone enrolments - including 2018 Out of Zone younger siblings, and for new out of zone families:

If you have a child turning 5 next year and you are living outside of the school zone, please contact Elaine ASAP as you MUST complete an Out of Zone application form.  If you live within our zone and have a child starting school this year or next, please complete an enrolment form if you have not yet done so. If you know of a family who wish to enrol a child at this school in 2018, particularly if they have had a previous connection with the school, please tell them to contact the school urgently.

Class, Sibling and Individual photos:  PhotoLife will provide FREE delivery for all photos that are ordered and paid for by SUNDAY 20 AUGUST 2017.  Details for ordering are shown on the “shoot key’ form that was sent home.

Daffodil Day Friday 25th August - Whole school - Bring a gold coin donation to fundraise for the Cancer Society.  Dress in as much yellow/green/orange as you can!

Pikiake children will be parading around the school at 9am in their Daffodil Day hats followed by a performance of some songs in the hall for the rest of the school and parents/caregivers/whanau. Invitations to follow for Pikiake parents.

Centenary - The initial Centenary group met on Monday evening. We have set the dates March 8th, 9th as the centenary date in 2019. Our next meeting - 18 September. If you would like to be involved, please pencil the date in your diary. As a matter of interest, I believe that the school was declared open on the 1st February, 1919. We will need to mark that day at the start of 2019.

Thank you very much to parents who have volunteered to set up our 100th celebration.

Alumni Get together - September 14th - The school’s Learning Trust is organising an event at The Good Home - 6pm to 8pm - just a chance for adult ex-BPS students to catch up with each other. Please help spread the word. All very welcome.

15 August - BOT meeting at 6pm in the staffroom.

1 September - Cross country

19 & 20 September – Whanake show, Tiki Tour.  More information coming shortly.

29  September - Tentative PTA Quiz night - we have to move from 22nd Sept to 29th, as the Electoral Commission has commandeered the hall for the election on the 23rd.

Rippa:  We had a bit of luck with the weather for another magic day at the Rippa Rugby Tournament on Tuesday.  60 children competed against nine other schools.  We had some good results: the Year 5/6 Boys A team were 2nd equal, the Year 3/4 Boys A were 1st, and the Year 3/4 Girls were 4th in their respective divisions.  We were placed fourth on 13 points, after Beachhaven and Target Rd (16), and Verran on 15.  The final tournament day is 31 August.

Miniball/Basketball:  Games start next week. Players will be advised as soon as the draw is available.

Children’s Writing Room 2 have been learning about the jobs people do in our community.  Here are some of their ideas:
