Dear Parents

Mihi nui ki a koutou.

Board update - we have our first Board meeting next Wednesday, the 22nd. At this meeting, the Board will confirm how it intends to appoint a fifth parent Trustee, following Jo Fagan-Oslawskyj’s stepping down at the end of 2016. It is possible that this will be done by selection. If you would like to know about the work the Board does, perhaps interested in putting your name forward, please email bot@birkenheadprimary.school.nz  Current Trustees are: David Barker; Jo McDonald; Jason Britten, and Sam Perkins.

Shore to Shore 5KM fun run event is coming up on Sunday April 9th 2016. Shore to Shore is the North Shore's largest 5km fun run with nearly 5,000 participants in 2016. The run starts at Takapuna Grammar School and ends at Milford Reserve.  Parents - we have not taken part in the Fun Run as a school for some time and we don’t intend to do so this year. It became bigger than Texas, with barbecues, shade structures, etc etc. However, on a good day, it is a great opportunity for children to enjoy a Fun Run with Mum or Dad, or big sibling.  For further information, go to:  https://shoretoshore17.eventdesq.com/org

Teachers away - Mrs Sadler is back this week. Mrs Arrowsmith and Miss McMenamin are still not 100% mobile. Mrs Couldry is away today through Friday, attending a three day lecture programme for her University course. She will have a few more absences during the year, but we will try for the same relievers - Mrs Rees is relieving Wed and Thurs, Mrs Sanders Friday.

The swimming programme is going well at the Leisure Centre. The instructors are doing a great job with the children. They know exactly what to say to the children, and the children respond straight away.  I have been helping walk children down to the pool and back to school. They are  very sensible on the way to and from the pool. Great kids!

CLiPs parents - Your child’s teacher may well be looking for a CLiP!! The intention of the Class Liaison Parent scheme was to have a parent(s) for each class, who could help the class teacher with communications regarding class needs, teacher needs for help; to help new children and families assimilate into the school, and to arrange a class event each Term for children and parents to get together. Please consider helping out.

Meet the Teachers, Meet the parents: Look for a separate notice soon.

Logan - this week Logan is putting Autex composition display tiles in Room 6, making the room look a lot more attractive, and allowing Miss Atkins to display the children’s work. He will also be doing the handrail for the new steps. He makes a great contribution to the school.

Mandarin Language - As planned, we have a new Assistant for 2017. Her name is Connie, she is

a great young lady, and I am sure the children will respond to her very positively.

Liz Summerville Counsellor: Liz will be taking leave from the week of 27th February until the beginning of term two. Carol-Anne Begbie, an experienced counsellor with extensive experience in working with children, will be taking over during that time, commencing on Thursday 9th March and will remain at school every Thursday until the end of term one.

If you would prefer your child to wait until Liz returns, to attend counselling please contact Carole-Anne on 021 024 96654 or email her on counsellingservicesnz@gmail.com

You can also let  Elaine know, if you wish. Otherwise children will be able to see Carol-Anne in the same way they see Liz.

Staff Car parksPlease do not drive into either of the school car parks to drop off children.  These are intended for staff and people who have business in the school/are attending meetings with staff members. Please use the drop off zones outside the school gates where children can walk safely on footpaths, through the archway at the top gate or the little side gate at the bottom. There are often not enough parking spaces for staff!

Phrase of the week: We have not got our phrase list finalised for 2017 but, in the meantime, you could acknowledge your child’s good efforts with ‘Tinopai to mahi’ - ‘very good work’.

Pulse of Learning
It was such a pleasure to walk into Room 17 maths class and see a full numeracy programme in action. Children were engaged, learning different strategies in small groups and explaining their thinking.  Independent activities were varied and foccused on maths practice.

Rawan here is using a maths equipment, the Place Value flip chart, to work out the number that is one or ten more than a given number.  We are so lucky to have Miss Robison, who is new to teaching in NZ but has spent her evenings and and weekends learning our numeracy framework, strategies and teaching approach, and setting things up for a great start to the year for the children.      Alice Ho
