Meet the Teachers, Meet the Parents

Thank you very much to all of you who attended the ‘Meet each other’ evening. I do hope that the opportunity was of value for you - to ask a question, arrange a follow up, meet new school families. My thanks to Nicki, Rachel, and Ange, to all teachers, Mrs Fairhall, and Miss Ho, and to David, Andrew, and Mel.

David Barker and I had some really valuable conversations with some of you during the evening - thank you for your time.

Parents we spoke to:

  • Were quite happy to receive any school communications by email.
  • Valued the community nature of the school, and friendly nature of parents and children.
  • Liked the School’s vision statement - ‘Reaching our heights; Looking to our horizons’.
  • Liked the positive relationships within the school, and the way in which children are encouraged to solve problems they have in their relationships with peers.
  • Suggested a Term Calendar that shows the parents of NEs who start each term, the school events that will be happening in that first term, as parents get used to school routines.
  • Could not think of any safety issues for the school, but did like the idea of stronger personal safety messages for the children, and did like the way the Pikiake team releases children to parents at 3pm.
  • Would like to see additional extension activities for children, and see the newsletter highlighting academic success.
  • Suggested that children and parents writing together could be a good way to support children’s writing development.
  • Appreciated the way the school gives children and parents the time they need to solve issues, address problems.
  • Thought that ‘Integrity’ was something we should all strive for!

Phrase of the Week in Te Reo:  ‘Naumai. Haere mai’ - ‘Welcome. Come to me.’

Can you help?   If you have any old video cassette tapes you don’t mind getting rid of, please send them to Ms Ho’s office.  We need them for a technology project.  Thanks.

Warning -  Parents, please be aware that if you park in the 2minute parking outside the front of the school and leave your car, you may be fined. It's P2 between 830-930am and 230-330pm, for drops off only.  The parking wardens can turn up at any time and issue tickets for all sorts of things.  You park there at your own risk.

Health and Safety Parents - we sent an email out last week about a safety incident near Northcote Intermediate. It did transpire that this was an innocent incident - a valued member of the school’s community offered a student a lift to school because it was raining. The person concerned has apologised to the school for the upset caused.

KAWAKAWA BALM:  BPS’s world famous balm is available from the office for $2.  Made by CSI at school, from our own plants.  (CSI is school’s enviro group.)

Room 7 children (Y2) shared their writing about their fun bus. Joanna wrote that “the fun is inside my fun bus”, and that her “bus is sparkly”.  Anna responded by commenting that she liked the word “sparkly”’ and she thought Joanna’s writing was “funny to listen to”.   Thank you Miss Aimee Shaffrey for setting up a lovely community of writers who share their work and give each other feedback.

Congratulations to last week’s Principal’s Award winners:
