Dear Parents

We are well under way!!

Our roll today is 415, with 30 children already enrolled to start during the year, so, with further enrolments, may well finish the year around 460 children. Our teachers are settling the children in, and are working very hard to get systems set up, planning updated, getting to know their children, planning the other activities at this time of the year.

Our swimming programme is under way, after a slight hiccup with Leisure Centre communications.  Year Threes will be having David Lyles’ Swim School tuition next week in our own pool, and Years 4 to 6 are having tuition at the Leisure Centre with the same team.

We had a very small attendance at the PTA meeting last night, but still productive. Make sure you keep March 3rd free for the renowned annual ‘Camp at School’ night - with the usual extremely entertaining talent quest, glow sticks, games, fun.

Our Values and Manaakitanga

‘We strive, inquire, achieve

We participate, contribute, and care

We act with integrity and respect.’

Miss Ho spoke to the children at assembly last week, and referred to the Maori concept of manaakitanga - hospitality, kindness, generosity, support - the process of showing respect, generosity and care for others - asking the children to be welcoming towards new children, and to show respect for those around them.

Teachers away - Mrs Hughson is back at work this week - Welcome back Sue. Mrs Arrowsmith is working mornings only, and may have to continue this next week. Mrs Sadler is going to be away next week too - her leg still mending. Miss McMenamin may be away for the rest of the week, after her wakeboarding accident.

Health and Safety - our thanks to the Birkenhead Shopping centre for their help at the end of last year to re-establish safety procedures in the lower gateway, Warehouse loading bay area.

Contact details: Parents - please email Elaine - office@birkenheadprimary.school.nz - if you have changed address, landline, or mobile numbers, or if your emergency contact’s numbers have changed. We must be able to contact you in an emergency!!!  New parents - look out for more on this soon.

Feb 21 - ‘Meet Teachers, Meet the parents’

March 3rd - Camp at school night.

April 11th - Triangles for Term One.

April 13th (Thursday)  - Term 1 ends.

Can you help? Crossing patrol parent needed for Thursday mornings.  The crossing in Mokoia Road is manned by Year 6 students but offers from any parent from within the school would be welcomed.  Please contact Anna Robison (Room 17 teacher)  arobison@birkenheadprimary.school.nz if you think you may be able to help.

Smart Moves is due to start on the 21st Feb but due to insufficient adult supervisors we may not be able to run the program this term. If you or someone you know might be able to help (Tues, Wed, Thurs – 9-10.20) please contact Rachel rgrant@birkenheadprimary.school.nz

Pulse of Learning

We had two Professional Development days in the summer holidays unpacking the concept of Responsiveness, and then aligning our literacy and maths planning and writer’s checklists across the school.  These are important first steps to becoming more responsive in the classroom, and we are all very pleased to have sorted them out so soon.

Sam and Lana, emergent readers in Room 2 (Ms Couldry), were learning to point to the word as they read.  Tino pai!  This useful reading strategy helps them match spoken words to written ones.

Sports:   Notices for miniball/basketball and flippaball are available in the foyer.  Flippa ball notices MUST be back by Thursday!

PTA EZlunch: Our Tuesday Pita Pit EZlunch service is underway for 2017.  You can register at www.ezlunch.co.nz and have delicious Pita Pit delivered to your child every Tuesday for lunch (and raise money for the school at the same time!).  If you are already a customer, you will be prompted to change your child’s class number when you first order for 2017.  Any questions, please email pta@birkenheadprimary.school.nz.

Have a wonderful week
