Welcome back everyone to Term 3!  I hope you all managed some quality time with your family. A special welcome to the eight new entrants who started in Room 5 this Monday and to their whānau. Also, a very special welcome to our new teachers this term- Mr Colin Banyard in Room 14 and Miss Chikera Atkins in Room 9.

New carpets: Many of you will have noticed that Rooms 1, 2 and 17, and the office areas, are re-carpeted.  Thanks to Logan Smith, our property manager, for working long hours in the holidays to get that done in time for the start of the term.

New Resource Room:  Thank you to the PTA for funding the container which is now being used as our new resource room.  Logan has made a fantastic job of building shelves in there and a huge thank you goes to to both Logan and Mrs Rees for moving all of the resources during the holidays!

Professional Development: Our dedicated teachers spent a day in the holidays looking at effective writing approaches with well-regarded literacy consultant, Jill Eggleton.  It was affirming to know that most of her recommendations fit our current “Children as Writers” approach. We will trial some of her other ideas and continue to refine our writing programmes.

Learning: Pikiake and Whanake children are continuing with their inquiry into Refugees.  Yesterday Dawit Arshak, Senior Resettlement Case Worker at NZ Red Cross, talked to tamariki about his own journey from Ethiopia to resettle in New Zealand.  The children asked lots of perceptive questions.  Room 5 have already connected Dawit’s story to the five basic human needs that they have been learning.  They have also identified how New Zealand helped to satisfy the basic needs that Dawit lost when he became a refugee.  Ka mau te wehi, particularly for a new entrant/year one class!  This inquiry unit will conclude with tamariki making their own contribution to support refugees and new kiwis.

Battens: Parents and whānau, there are set rules for children to follow when playing in the batten area.  These are clearly displayed on fences/windows nearby.  Please remind tamariki of these rules, as we will continue to ensure that this area is kept as safe as possible for the children to enjoy.  Please also note that the area is not to be used before or after school hours for safety and supervision reasons.

The Poetry Project 2016 - Some of our students have their work on display at NorthArt Gallery in Norman King Square, Northcote shopping centre.  The exhibition is open all this week (until Sunday) between  10am and 4pm.  More information is available at https://www.facebook.com/events/175160086233137/

IMPORTANT: 2017 Out of Zone enrolments for siblings of current students:

If you live outside of the school zone and have a child turning five next year intending to enrol in our school, please contact Elaine as soon as possible to complete an Out of Zone application form.

Likewise, if you live within the school zone and have a child turning five in 2017, please make sure that we have your completed enrolment documents on hand. We need to confirm potential new entrant numbers for 2017 to assist with planning for next year.

Reminders: School starts at 8.50am promptly.  Please leave a message on the absence line if your child is going to be absent by 8.45am.  Approval must be sought in advance for any time out of school during term time.

Please make sure your child takes home all their belongings each day to minimise the number  of items we seem to acquire in the Lost Property bin.

If your child comes home wearing a change of clothing, please return all garments in a clean condition.

Smartmoves starts next week for our New Entrants, each Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday at 9-9:45 in the hall.  This amazing programme does rely on lots of parent assistance in order to run effectively. Please see Ms Mac or Mrs Sutherland if you can help at one or more of these sessions.
