Malo e lelei!! Mou fefe hake?

This week is Tongan Language Week. On Friday of this week, we have some of our Tongan parents and family coming in to teach the children a little Tongan language, and to tell them a little about what it means to them to be Tongan/a member of the Tongan community in Auckland. I know that the children will enjoy this experience, and thank parents and family for helping us out.

Whanake Show is coming together - there is lots of activity happening - dance practice, costume making, set design - we are all looking forward to seeing Whanake children on stage.

Events this week:

Rippa - it was muddy, but it was warm. The children had some good wins, and a great day of Rippa.

Cross Country - There were some muddy clothes afterwards, but well done children - it is always absolutely fantastic to see you all try your very best, support your classmates, cheer others on. Thanks parents for supporting the children. Thanks also to Miss Weir for organising this wonderful event.

Alumni Get together - September 14th at ‘The Good Home’ - 6pm

Did you attend Birkenhead Primary School as a student? Come to our get together.

We want this event to become an annual fixture, especially in the lead up to the School’s Centenary in 2019 - a fun, informal get together - so this year will be a starting point. Geordie Lindsay-Russell, alumni, member of the school’s Learning Trust, and partner of Miss Robison, is helping set the event up - thanks heaps Geordie.

This year’s get together will take a University Challenge type format, so get a group together, and come along and compete for prizes by: identifying the mystery guest; answering such questions as:

Who was the school’s Deputy Principal in the year ‘1993’.

What significant school event happened in 1969?

It would be fantastic to have lots of alumni there - of all age groups - if you attended BPS, PLEASE come along. Please email me for information if you wish.

HEAD LICE: We have been advised of a several cases of headlice in the school

Please could you check your child’s hair (and the rest of your family too) and treat if necessary before your child comes to school.  Long hair could be tied back to help prevent the spread of head lice.  Please contact your local pharmacy for expert advice on the correct treatment to use. A brochure provided by our Public Health Nurse, is also available from the office

Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

We know little people can make a big difference, and Issy Bakewell-White (Room 12) is proving that! Issy and her mum, Jodie, are running in the Auckland Marathon to raise money for Starship Foundation. Issy wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for Starship, so this fundraising effort means a lot to Issy and her family. If you’d like to support Issy and Jodie, please head to https://aucklandmarathon2017.everydayhero.com/nz/jodie_issy to read more about their efforts and donate should you wish.

Here is some lovely descriptive writing from a Year 6 student in Room 15.

Glistening sparkles are on the sandy beach

The salty sea air goes up my nostrils

Waves crash together as they softly land on the sandy beach

The vinegar like water rests against me

The water tastes like salty sand as it thrusts into my mouth

My scaly skin shines in the sun as it twists and turns and squiggles and turns and squiggles.
