> About The School

School Organisation

We are proud of our school, because it is a place which strives to do the best it can for all children, regardless of their needs, their background, their ethnicity, and so on.

The school is a U5 Contributing – with approximately 340 children of a variety of cultures. The children are great kids who individually enrich our local community and school.

Our key curriculum goals for 2007 are:
•    To continue to develop a formative assessment approach in the school
•    To continue to integrate ICT and implement Problem Based Learning
•    To improve Literacy programmes – Written Language particularly
•    To introduce KnowledgeNet to the school
•    To introduce a new Student Management System

General
We have two syndicates - a Junior School made up of 7 classes from New Entrants to Year 3, and a Senior Syndicate comprising 6 classes providing for our Year 4s to 6s. Our Deputy Principal, Annie Nelson, leads the Seniors, and our Assistant Principal, Marie Blair,  leads the Junior team.

We have 0.4 Reading Recovery, ESOL tutoring each day, CWEA activities, SEG support and Special Needs programmes, supported by a  Special Needs and Gifted and Talented Co-ordinator, Visse Hopley.  We believe in the Beginning Teacher programme and provide the full 0.2 component, fully supported by Rachael Shamy as our PRT co-ordinator.

The School is a great working environment, with staff of different ages and interests. Teachers are very supportive of each other both professionally and personally. We plan cooperatively and so manage to find the time to socialise. The children are generally good natured, and the school provides excellent learning opportunities for all. We actively encourage a partnership between parents and children, and so, school-parent relationships are generally excellent.

The school firmly believes in the integration of I.C.T. across the curriculum, and the children are developing excellent skills on the computers. The school focuses on Problem Based Learning and Inquiry learning. Our new hall is allowing us to do lots of things we have not been able to do – whole school assemblies right through the year, sports practices, discos, performances etc.

We have a Choir, an Orchestra, a Band programme (parent paid) and an active Music programme, with all children Year Three and above learning to read music and play the recorder. We encourage outside businesses to provide music tuition in school time - guitar, piano and drums. We also offer a range of sports options - badminton, swimming, touch, soccer, cricket, netball, hockey and gymnastics. We are currently part of the Birkenhead Waterwise Trust and our Year 5 and 6 children take part in yachting and kayaking skills and water safety.

We have a new Board of Trustees – with three new Trustees, and look forward to continuing a positive relationship with them. They are very appreciative of the staff’s efforts. The P.T.A. is a good communication forum and makes a huge effort all year to raise a large sum of money especially in December when the local community joins us at our annual school Fair.
