Assessment and Reporting

Like most other schools in New Zealand, we are continually developing our Assessment aqnd Reporting procedures.

Our approach is based on the following:
That assessment is essentially a part of a process - we assess children to identify teaching needs for the future, we plan our teaching units accordingly, we teach the programme, and then assess the children to check their progress and our effectiveness, and use the results of those assessments to help our reporting prrocess - ie assess - plan - teach - assess - report - plan - teach - and so on.

We use a number of tools - Running Records and S.T.A.R. testing to gauge Reading achievement; P.A.T. Tests in Mathematics, Reading, and Listening skills; Asstle Tests amongst others.

Our reporting to parents is based on the idea that the child should be fully involved at all times in this process, and that everyone talks "with" the child, rather than "about" the child. We would like to see the children take increasing responsibility for reporting their own progress.

We report to parents as follows:
Term One
Week Three - We set the scene with a parent information evening
Week Five - We have our first "Triangles" - parents, child, and teacher meet - with the child having an active role - to discuss the child's needs, strengths, etc and goal setting.
Term Two
Week 10 - A Portfolio is sent home - highlighting the child's work, noting his/her progress towards the goals set in Term One, and including the child's current Reading Age and Maths Stage.
Term Three
Week Two - Our second "Triangles" - to discuss the portfolio, and look at goals for the second half of the year.
Term Four
Week 9 - A written report goes home, with a brief assessment of the second half year goals.

Teachers are happy to meet with parents at any other time by arrangement.
