Physical Activity and Sports
Physical activity is part of every day at Birkenhead Primary. Classes take part in aerobic fitness to music as well as activities that promote fine and gross motor skills. Swimming is taught in the school pool in terms one and four. During term three all classes train to take part in a whole school cross country competition with the highest placed runners going on to inter-school cross country competition.

ALL YEAR SPORTS
The following sports are played throughout the year.
· 4 basketball teams (Years 5-6)
· 4 Miniball teams (Years 2-4)
· 2 Flippa Ball teams (Years 5-6)
WINTER TEAM SPORTS
Winter sports are played throughout terms 3 and 4, and can get a little chilly at times.
Netball: 3 Year 5-6 teams (Senior Netball)
3 Year 3-4 teams (Junior Netties)
3 Year 1-2 teams (Future Ferns)
Hockey: 1 Year 3-4 team
2 Year 5-6 teams
SUMMER TEAM SPORTS
Summer (or spring) sports are played for between six to eight weeks in term 4. It is a good way for kids to try out new sports before if they are thinking of taking it up the following year. Codes available in term 4 are:
Along with the team sports played outside of school time, teams have also participated in inter-school events within our cluster. These codes include:
· two major swimming events (term 1 and term 3)
· badminton (term 2, thanks to Mrs Sadler),
· rippa rugby (three days over two terms),
· cross country (term 3)
· athletics (term 4)
We have been fortunate to have In school coaching in gymnastics, soccer, rippa and volleyball.
