SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES AT BIRKENHEAD PRIMARY SCHOOL

CONSERVE - SECURE - INVEST

CSI is Birkenhead Primary's envirogroup.  We meet at lunchtimes to help our school environment.

We look after our Lawson Reserve, which is full of native plants, and also our own fruit and vegetable gardens.  We make kawakawa ointment and grow seedlings for us and for thefund raising produce barrow.

We are a Waicare school, we are in charge of testing the water in Le Roy's Bush.

Paper Recycling

In the school there are paper bins in every class.  Students pick up the paper bins and check if it's double sided (reducing waste) and take it to the blue bins for collection.  We have single sided bins in each class for drawing, group work and making things.  We recycle paper so people can make it into new pieces of paper to use so we don't have to cut down as many trees.

Other Recycling

We have bins for the whole school: red for rubbish, green for plastic, cans and glass recycling and blue for card and paper.  This is so we can learn to be tidy kiwis and stop littering all over the school and to help Mr Singh, our Caretaker.
