Wellbeing - International students

We want to make sure that international students at Birkenhead Primary School have a wonderful learning experience, make friends and enjoy New Zealand's culture and educational benefits. Here are some of the ways we look after international students at our school.

Pastoral care

Birkenhead Primary School will provide instruction to the best of its ability, and will place the child appropriately within the organisation of the school. The school will offer one staff meeting each year to discuss the needs of the International Students in the school – dealing with the food, dress and home routines of these children.

Birkenhead Primary School has also agreed to observe and be bound by the Code of Practice for the Pastoral care of International Students, published by the Minister of Education.

Download the Code of Practice (PDF) or vist the Ministry of Education website at www.minedu.govt.nz for more information.

Orientation and support

On arrival, students and their families will be shown around the school and introduced to key members of staff.  A buddy will be assigned to the new student for the first two weeks.

The school can call on Team Solutions for same language support and counselling. We also have an agreement with a member of the Korean community, who is able to assist with translation in meetings between school and parents.

Insurance and health

Birkenhead Primary School makes it a condition of enrolment that International Students have New Zealand-based comprehensive health, travel, and personal effects insurance. This ensures that students remain protected while studying with us.

Eligibility for health services
Most international students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand. If you receive medical treatment during your visit, you may be liable for the full costs of that treatment. Full details on entitlements to publicly-funded health services are available through the Ministry of Health, and can be viewed on their website at http://www.moh.govt.nz.

Accident insurance
The Accident Compensation Corporation provides accident insurance for all New Zealand citizens, residents and temporary visitors to New Zealand, but you may still be liable for all other medical and related costs. Further information can be viewed on the ACC website at http://www.acc.co.nz.

Medical and travel insurance
International students must have appropriate and current medical and travel insurance while studying in New Zealand.
